SEMICON
Europa 2000
What do strong beer season, Ballet Festival Week, the Hunting
and Fishing Show, and Semicon Europa have in common? They're all taking
place the week of April 4 in Munich this year. The continent's biggest
conglomeration of semiconductor equipment, materials, components, and
services companies celebrates its second anniversary in its new home,
the Munich Trade Fair Center, or Messe, as the Germans call it. During
the inaugural event, showgoers discovered that the Bavarian capital is
flush with opportunities for artistic and hedonistic pursuits. A hearty
meal of perfectly steamed white asparagus, hot Spaetzle noodles, and tender
wienerschnitzel washed down by a stein of freshly drawn lager or Weissbier
can bring sweet relief after the stress of the show floor. If you have
a little time for sightseeing in your busy schedule, options abound in
Munich. For those with a hankering for the masters, there's the world-class
Pinakothek and Lenbachhaus art galleries. The massive Deutsches Museum
of science and technology is a mecca for propeller heads of all stripes,
while the old-world flavor of the Marienplatz straddles the thin line
between charm and cheese. Semicon itself continues to grow, with more
than 1000 exhibitors expected this year, spread out among four halls.
The conference and educational programs offer plenty of chances to continue
your professional education. Recommended picks include the IEEE/SEMI Semiconductor
Manufacturing Conference at the Hotel Maritim on Monday, April 3, as well
as the European Semiconductor Equipment Assessment (SEA)symposium and
copper/low-k interconnect technologies sessions on the afternoons of Tuesday
and Wednesday, April 4 and 5. In the spirit of European unity, the 4th
Fab Management Forum takes place on the day after the show closes, Friday,
April 7, in Grenoble, France. If you're working the show, come by and
have a cold one on MICRO in Hall 2, Booth 565.
