'Vanishing' LCD disappears?

A new display technology can make LCDs more readable than current small-screen displays, its developers say. Delta Optoelectronics and Dow Chemical claim that their new polymeric light-emitting diode (pLED) screens can be read more easily than LEDs that must be viewed either straight on or when backlit. The high brightness of the pLEDs "gives them excellent visibility from a wide viewing angle," says Chun-hui Tsai, general manager of Delta Optoelectronics in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Delta's displays use Dow Chemical's green polyfluorene copolymer. The material is capable of producing light as bright as a television screen using only a small power source, Dow says. The displays are well suited for use in cellular phones and other wireless devices because of their high-contrast images and thinness, according to Dow. Information: 800/ 441-4369.
