In a one-time flip-flop, the San Jose cart leads the San Francisco horse at this year's Semicon West. The final manufacturing segment leads off at the S.J. Convention Center from Wednesday, July 17, through Friday, July 19. The venue switches over the weekend to Baghdad by the Bay, with the wafer processing exhibits at Moscone Center running from Monday, July 22, through Wednesday, July 24. Show organizers foresee a dropoff of about 10% from the 1450 exhibiting companies and 60,000 registrants who participated in last year's event. Technical program highlights include the daylong ITRS meeting at the Nikko Hotel on the 24th, and the dozen SEMI Technology Symposium sessions on the 22nd and 23rd at the Marriott. Although the industry downturn may put a damper on the scope of the sundry parties thrown by the exhibiting companies, there will be no shortage of schmooze. Baseball fans can make a pilgrimage to the House that Bonds Built, when the hometown Giants square off against the St. Louis Cardinals at Pacific Bell Park. Music aficionados can get a '70s smile from Linda Ronstadt at Davies Symphony Hall on the 23rd, an '80s sneer from Billy Idol at the Warfield on the 23rd and 24th, and an Irish wink from Solas at Slim's on the 20th. When you've recovered from the night before and are working the showfloor, stroll by MICRO's booth and say hello--we'll be in South Hall, Booth 1605.
