Ushiba named president of Watkins-Johnson's Japanese unit; Foster appointed president, CEO of MRC; SEMI promotes Hadfield; Glasser to oversee KLA program

Keisuke Yawata retires this month as president and CEO of Applied Materials Japan. He had served in the post since January 1995 and will continue to serve as an adviser to the front-end equipment provider. Yawata's successor, Yoichi Akasaka, is the former senior vp of Japan product operations and vp of parent company Applied Materials.... California-based Watkins-Johnson has made two international appointments. Teruo Ushiba has been named president of Watkins-Johnson International—Japan. He joins the subsidiary from Mitsubishi, where he most recently served as senior vp and gm of its Seattle branch. Stephen Lanza was appointed managing director of Watkins-Johnson International's European Operations in Linlithgow, Scotland.

As part of a companywide reorganization, Materials Research Corp. (MRC) has promoted Robert Foster to replace Tom Marmen as president and CEO. Foster is the former vp and gm of MRC's chemical vapor deposition division. The front-end equipment vendor also named Stephen Breckley to the newly created position of executive vp and COO. MRC has consolidated four divisions into three business units for semiconductor equipment, advanced materials, and magnetics and media applications. The chip equipment unit merges the operations of the former sputtering systems and CVD divisions. The semiconductor division will relocate its operations to the company's recently opened corporate headquarters in Gilbert, AZ.

Novellus has appointed Robert Smith to executive vp and CFO. He succeeds William Wall, who retired in December. Smith is the former president of Maxwell Graphics and a member of the Novellus board of directors. The San Jose–based tool vendor also named Sheila Vaidya group vp of the newly formed metals business group. Vaidya served as director of the advanced CVD metals product unit for Applied Materials.

The Foxboro Co. has appointed J. B. "Bruce" Robinson president of the Massachusetts-based supplier of automation systems. Robinson is the former president of Foxboro/Eckardt Europe. His successor in the European executive slot is Fernando Fuenzalida.... The new director of finance for Particle Measuring Systems is Mike Haas. He most recently served as a business analyst for IBM in Boulder, CO, site of his new employer's headquarters.... Stephen Desloge has joined Watlow Electric Manufacturing as vp, finance and administration. The St. Louis–based firm manufactures heaters, sensors, and controls.

SEMI has promoted Victoria Hadfield to vp of public policy. Based in Washington, DC, Hadfield joined the trade association in 1987 as director of public policy....John Calhoun has been appointed to the board of directors of Chemwest Systems, a manufacturer of wet process equipment and chemical distribution systems in Portland, OR. Calhoun is president of CMC Research, a publisher of medical CD-ROMs....Micro Weld of Austin, TX, has named James Taylor president. Micro Weld makes gas distribution panels and related process equipment. Taylor is a former equipment engineer with AMD....Roger Kray has been promoted from director of finance to vp of finance and administration at Ion Systems. David Dove has left Dryden Engineering to join Ion Systems as North American sales manager.

Tencor Instruments promoted Elwood "Woody" Spedden, Jr., to the newly created position of senior vp of field operations. Spedden joined Tencor as senior vp of sales in July.... Ark Pang was appointed vp and gm of the equipment and systems division of Ionics, a separations technology company based in Watertown, MA. It also named John Arnold vp of sales and marketing and Alan Crosby vp of operations.... Ansell Edmont Industrial appointed Bill Reed executive vp/regional director with responsibility for the North American protective products business. Alain Tranchemontagne has been promoted to director of marketing, North America, and Yvan Beaudoin has been appointed regional director, Ansell Edmont, Europe.

Lance Glasser has been named vp of advanced programs for the reticle and photomask inspection division of KLA Instruments. Glasser is the former director of the electronics technology office at DARPA. He will oversee a joint project with Sematech to develop a deep-UV photomask inspection system.... The new director of engineering at Semifab in Hollister, CA, is Edward Erickson. He is the former manufacturing operations manager for United Technologies' chemical systems division.... Jieh-Hwa Shyu has joined Millipore's microelectronics division as manager of its liquids applications development group.... John McPhee and John Bova have each been named general managers of new Class 1 garment processing cleanrooms in Albuquer-que and Tempe, AZ, respectively, for G&K Services' cleanroom division.
