Martin chosen president of Mattson; Murray appointed CFO of Soitec; Varian names Messer manager of North American operations; Rhine joins Hultquist Capital

Advanced Technology Materials has appointed James Burns president of its EcoSys environmental equipment subsidiary. He comes to the company from Genus's thin film division, where he was executive vp and gm. Former acting president Michael W. Hayes will become vp of sales and marketing.... Dennis Favero is the new vp of finance and CFO for AG Associates, a San Jose­based supplier of RTP equipment.... Silicon Valley Group filled two vp positions in its track systems division. Patrick Halahan was named vp of engineering, while the new vp of operations is David Nealon. In related news, the firm added Hewlett-Packard's vp and treasurer, Lawrence Tomlinson, to its board of directors. Tomlinson's career at Hewlett-Packard spans 31 years.

The new president of Mattson Technology is Ralph Martin. He is the former executive vp and COO for the Fremont, CA­based equipment manufacturer.... Photronics has promoted James Northup from vp of California, Colorado, and Connecticut operations to senior vp of operations. Northup will be responsible for each of its five North American sites. The photomask supplier also announced the promotions of Jack Moneta to senior vp of planning and business development and David Heilman to senior vp of sales and marketing.... Watkins-Johnson selected Marty Mason as vp of global business operations for the company's semiconductor equipment group. Mason formerly served as vp of field operations and support for North America.

Gadi Neumann has been named vp of product development at Fairchild Technologies (FT), a supplier of microlithography systems, thin-film head tools, and coating equipment. He will work out of the firm's manufacturing facility in Germany. Neumann is a founder and former managing director of Orbot Instruments, an Israel-based vendor recently purchased by Applied Materials. In related news, Jacques Moskovic, president and CEO of FT, has been named senior vp of Fairchild, FT's parent.... All legal matters at KLA Instruments will be handled by Lisa Berry, who was hired as corporate vp and general counsel. Berry joins KLA from LSI Logic, where she spent five years as associate general counsel and assistant general counsel.

Iain Murray has been appointed CFO of Soitec, the French manufacturer of SOI wafers. Its U.S. subsidiary is in Peabody, MA.... CVC Products named a new director of corporate communications. Zoe Piliero has moved into the position from her previous post as corporate communications manager. Piliero joined the Rochester, NY­based supplier of thin-film process equipment in June of 1996.

In his newly appointed position as vp of engineering for SubMicron Systems, Joseph Moran will oversee the development of the company's line of integrated wet stations. In other news, Robert Glass was appointed regional sales manager, western and mountain states.... William Galloway, Jr., has stepped down as chairman and CEO of Petroferm, a Fernandina Beach, FL­based specialty chemicals vendor. His successor is Michael E. Hayes, who was formerly vp of technology. In other appointments, Petroferm employee Richard Stewart, Jr., assumes directorship of sales, and Craig Hood becomes the marketing director.

Appointed vp of manufacturing operations at Asyst Technologies is Gerry McFaull, formerly of Lam Research. Before joining Lam, McFaull worked for Ultratech Stepper and Xerox for more than 20 years.... Greg Harmon has been named engineering manager for Blue Wave Ultrasonics. Harmon first came aboard Blue Wave as director of manufacturing when the firm purchased his former employer, Bendix, which claims to be the first company to have used ultrasonic cleaning technology in a production setting.... Bruce Rhine and Pat Nichols recently joined Hultquist Capital of San Francisco as principals. Rhine is the former president and COO of Asyst and a former vp at Lam Research. Nichols has held operational, financial, and senior management posts at companies such as Raychem and Noller Communications. Hultquist specializes in mergers, acquisitions, and IPO advisory services.

Varian Associates has named James Messer manager of North American operations/customer support. He will be responsible for maintaining the service delivery system for all of North America. The Palo Alto, CA­based manufacturer of ion implanters and related front-end equipment also recently hired Charles Martel to be the district service manager for the Austin, TX, area.
