Betz, Huber honored by SEMI; Katz chosen CTO of W-J's equipment unit; Rust appointed gm at Fairchild Technologies; Chao to manage Ashland unit

George Scalise has left Apple Computer to join SIA as president of the trade association. Scalise, executive vp of operations at Apple, replaces Thomas Armstrong, who resigned in March. Before joining Apple, Scalise served as executive vp and CAO for National Semiconductor. He is a former chairman of SIA's public policy committee and a former board member of both Sematech and SRC.... Randy Truby was chosen president of Fluid Systems. A 20-year veteran at the San Diego­based company, Truby left for two years to form Spiral Composites, a manufacturer of specialty reverse osmosis and nanofiltration elements which was later purchased by Fluid Systems.... SW Industrial, a division of Swinerton, has named E. J. Edminister president. Edminister will expand the company's petroleum refinery construction services into the semiconductor, biopharmaceutical, and power industries. Stephen Blizzard, newly designated vp of operations, will aid in the company's restructuring.

SEMI has bestowed the 1997 European SEMI Awards on Hans-Georg Betz and Diethard Huber for their respective contributions in automated wet processing and optimized wafers. President of Steag Industrie, Betz established the company after licensing wafer-drying technology from Philips. Huber, the director of application at Wacker Siltronic, helped shepherd the introduction of optimized wafers into the commercial market.

Watkins-Johnson's semiconductor equipment group named a new CTO and promoted three executives. The Scotts Valley, CA­based company appointed Avishay Katz vp and CTO. He is a former manager with the Electric Power Research Institute. The supplier also named Matthew Watson vp of new business development and strategic marketing, James Bondur vp of research and development, and Mark Danna vp of design engineering.... Kenneth Wolf, former vp of the logic products business unit at National Semiconductor, has joined Burr-Brown as executive vp of worldwide operations.... After 26 years of service with 3M and a position as vp of operations at DeZurik, Kenton Toomey has been appointed vp of operations for Osmonics, the Minnetonka, MN­based vendor of water and liquid purification products.... Darlene Gardner has been selected vp of operations for Microbar, a manufacturer of chemical-management systems.

Former GaSonics International senior executive Werner Rust has been appointed gm of Fairchild Technologies' newly formed intermetal dielectric products group. Paul Shirra also joined the firm as vp of sales for North America.... John Varos is the new corporate technical director for Best Manufacturing. Based in Menlo, GA, the company makes industrial gloves.... Now overseeing operations at the chemical management services group at Olin Microelectronic Materials is Joel Trevino, the company's newly appointed commercial development manager for environmental services. He will be located at the firm's plant in Chandler, AZ.

Johnson Matthey Electronics selected Mathew May to fill the newly created position of quality assurance/manufacturing systems manager for the company's wafer fabrication materials group. The division produces sputtering targets and related front-end products.... Tony Chao has been named Asian business development manager for the electronic chemicals division of Ashland Chemical. The Ohio-based supplier also hired a business manager and an applications engineer for the firm's Ashland-ACT unit, a supplier of photoresist strippers. Tom Kloffenstein will act as business manager for the company's West Coast applications laboratory in Campbell, CA. Janet Bayer will serve as applications engineer.... Rochester, NY­based CVC, a supplier of thin-film process equipment, appointed David Campbell to the position of New York process technology and applications development director. Boris Relja will undertake the role of marketing director, semiconductor products division.

PRI Automation promoted John Chrisos to vp of marketing.... EcoSys, a specialist in point-of-use environmental equipment for the semiconductor industry, has chosen Peter Shamshoian vp of sales and service. He will be responsible for consolidating all of the company's field operations.... The new marketing and business manager at Teledyne Brown Engineering's Hastings Instruments subsidiary is Charles Fulmer.... Tegal's new vp of marketing and customer application support is Diane Fennell. She was most recently president of FAI, a sales and distribution firm for ion beam and etching equipment.

Tech Spray, a producer of chemical cleaners and antistatic solutions headquartered in Amarillo, TX, named Richard Platts national sales manager.... Joseph Arbios has been hired by PVA consumable products manufacturer Rippey as director of marketing.
