Balzola named president of D&Z Microelectronics; Ellick chosen president, CEO of Mitsubishi Silicon America; Grandinetti picked as executive vp at Metron

Sematech has named C. Rinn Cleavelin director of front-end processes. Cleavelin is on assignment to the Austin, TX—based consortium from Texas Instruments. He most recently served as technology manager for TI's Worldwide Manufacturing Science and Technology Center. Cleavelin holds four U.S. patents and has served as a member of SIA's National Technology Roadmap for semiconductors materials and bulk processes technical working group.

Asuri Raghavan has left Kulicke and Soffa Industries to join GaSonics International as president and CEO. Formerly equipment group president at Kulicke and Soffa, Raghavan replaces Dave Toole, who has been appointed chairman of the board at GaSonics. The former chairman, Monte Toole, has been named vice chairman. . . . Philips Semiconductors has appointed Scott McGregor senior vp and gm. He will lead the company's new Emerging Business unit.

Jim Ellick has been named president and CEO of Mitsubishi Silicon America (MSA). He previously was president and CEO of Photon Dynamics. MSA's former president and CEO, Hisashi Uchida, has replaced Stanley Myers, president of SEMI, as chairman of the board at MSA. . . . KLA-Tencor has appointed Michael Chuang president of its Taiwanese subsidiary, KLA-Tencor Taiwan. Chuang joins the firm from Balzers and Leybold. . . . Novellus has tabbed M.T. Matsumoto president of Nippon Novellus, the company's subsidiary in Kanagawa, Japan. Matsumoto comes to the deposition tool vendor from TI.

Peter Balzola is the new president of D&Z Microelectronics. He had been the company's director of new facilities and support since September 1997. Before joining D&Z, he was the senior project manager for Industrial Design Corp. in Portland, OR. . . . Polymer Design has appointed Frank Lessen president and CEO. He is the founder of El-Mar Plastics and Paulex Tool and Mold and the former president of Precision Plastics. . . . Dryden Engineering has named Gene Sullivan CEO. He had been the company's president since 1990. Louis Perrone has joined Dryden's board of directors. Perrone was vp of marketing and technology and vp of business development at GaSonics International until 1996 when he founded the management consulting firm Greenwich Advisors.

Steven Chisolm has been named a senior vp of Pall and also has been appointed to the company's operating committee. Chisolm has worked for Pall since 1981, most recently serving as a corporate vp. . . . Chip equipment and materials distributor Metron Technology has named Michael Grandinetti executive vp of its newly formed materials division. He comes to Metron from Tylan General, where he held executive positions including senior vp, vp of sales and marketing, and vp of marketing. . . . Cymer has promoted Pascal Didier to senior vp of worldwide customer operations. He is the company's former vp of sales and marketing; previously he was vp of worldwide sales and field operations for GaSonics.

Varian Associates has made three appointments. Tsuyoshi Naito has been named gm of semiconductor equipment factory and engineering operations of the company's Japanese subsidiary. He is the former gm of Semitool Japan and a former technical director for Lam Research Japan. G. Dennis Key has been appointed vp of sales and marketing. Key is the former vp of sales and field operations at Lam Research. Gary Mezack also joins Varian as marketing manager for its ion implant systems division. He was vp and gm of the SXM atomic force microscopy product line at Veeco Instruments.

J. W. Ahn joins Ion Systems to fill the newly created position of country manager for South Korea. Ahn, who is also the president of Sun Woo, previously served as the deputy gm for the semiconductor business unit at Sudo Premium Engineering. Maureen McCracken has been promoted to director of marketing at the Berkeley, CA—based vendor. . . . Nathan Coe has left Nikon to join Nanometrics as director of sales for North America. The former manager of microelectronics systems at Nikon, Coe replaces Roger Ingalls, Jr., who has been named vp and director of marketing.

Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions has appointed Roger Welker senior director of its new applications department. He previously held executive positions at Micropolis, Seagate, and IBM. . . . Todd Hylton has been named chief technology officer at Commonwealth Scientific, a supplier of deposition, etch, and DLC systems, processes, and services. He joins the Alexandria, VA—based company from the thin-film design and development firm Imaginet, where he was president.

The floor products division of VPI has named Dale Tucker national ESD sales manager. . . . Clestra Cleanroom has appointed Paul Enderle regional sales manager for the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states.
