Kobayashi catapulted to head of Mitsubishi semiconductor venture; Cadwell named new Strasbaugh CEO; Parodi chosen chairman of Tegal

Ultra Clean Technology has named Clarence Granger president and COO. He was vp of media operations for Seagate Technology and president and CEO of HMT Technology (a Hitachi metals company). Granger succeeds Hisayoshi Kobayashi, a founder of the gas delivery company and Mitsubishi subsidiary, who is being promoted to head the parent company's new semiconductor business venture in Tokyo. . . . Jon Tompkins, chairman of the board of KLA-Tencor, has joined the supervisory board of directors of Metron, a global technology support company that sells and supports semiconductor manufacturing equipment. He also serves on the board of directors of Electro Scientific Industries and is board chairman of SEMI/Sematech.

Strasbaugh has named Tom Cadwell CEO. After 30 years with Monsanto Electronic Materials (MEMC), he joined Strasbaugh in 1998, serving as president and COO. . . . David Lam has been appointed chairman of the board of Tru-Si Technologies. He is the founder of Lam Research, which introduced the first fully automated plasma etcher for wafer processing in 1981. . . . Busch Semiconductor vacuum group has chosen James Usher president and COO. He joins Busch from Advanced Energy Industries, where he was business unit director for the worldwide semiconductor market and director of worldwide sales and marketing for the firm's German and U.K. subsidiaries.

David Malmberg has replaced David Buchanan as nonexecutive chairman of the board of directors of Three-Five Systems. An outside director of the company since 1993, Malmberg is chairman of Three-Five's compensation committee, head of the board's CEO search committee, and a member of the audit committee. Three-Five Systems also announced the appointment of Carl Derrington as vp and chief manufacturing officer. With the firm since 1986, Derrington was director of advanced manufacturing technology until 1998. . . . Cabot has named William "Mack" McCarthy CFO and Bill Williams director of global quality. McCarthy comes to Cabot after 23 years with Texas Instruments, where he was controller in the corporate services division and a member of the strategic leadership team of TI's defense systems and electronics group. Williams spent 35 years with Dexter's aerospace materials division, where he was involved in quality organization, marketing, and operations. . . . Michael Parodi has been chosen chairman of the board of Tegal. He also holds the posts of president and CEO. Before joining the company in 1997, he was chairman, president, and CEO of Semiconductor Systems (SSI).

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), a voluntary standards development organization, has announced the election of James Pierce as chairman, Donald Marlowe as vice chairman, and Richard Schulte as treasurer. ASTM has also conferred a merit award on Ulrich H. Koch, retired senior engineer of the Swagelok Valve Group. . . . Electro Scientific Industries has named Jonathan Howell senior vp and CFO, Bradford Cooley vp and chief technology officer, and Julia Harper vp of finance. . . . Asyst Technologies has appointed Robert Kane to the new position of president, European customer operations. Kane joins Asyst from Applied Materials, where he was director of business development in Europe for Applied's thermal processes and implant division.

David Leet has been named process engineering director of CVC, a supplier of deposition equipment for the fabrication of thin-film recording heads. Leet is responsible for organizing process engineering for data storage and semiconductor applications. . . . Mattson Technology, supplier of process equipment for manufacturing semiconductors, picked Theodore Hsiao as Taiwan country manager. Former sales manager of Lam Research Taiwan, Hsiao will be responsible for development and operations. . . . Fluoroware has promoted Drew Richardson to general manager of Fluoroware PEI. Previously he was new product development manager and applications manager.

Ion Systems has appointed John O'Reilly to the new position of semiconductor sector manager. He will head semiconductor product design, marketing, and evolution. . . . ESCA, supplier of parts cleaning, has chosen Henry C. Peebles as research and development manager. His duties include the development of environmentally friendly plasma, chemical and laser technologies for the cleaning of IC fabrication tools. . . . Paul West has been named vp of sales and marketing of ThermoMicroscopes. A founder of TopoMetrix, he built one of the first scanning tunneling microscopes and has been a key figure in the scanning probe microscopy industry. . . . Sachem has appointed Richard Goodin vp, technology. He comes from Monsanto, where he served as external technology director in support of sustainable development and incubator efforts.
